Water heaters, done right the first time

Repair when repair makes sense. Replacement when it doesn't. We diagnose the actual failure, explain the options in plain language, and size the new system to how your household really uses hot water.

Tank, tankless or hybrid heat pump?

There is no single best water heater. The right choice depends on your fuel type, space, household size and budget — here's an honest side-by-side.

Standard tank

A storage tank keeps a set volume of water hot and ready. The most common setup in DMV homes.

Best for
Straight replacements, tighter budgets, and homes with predictable hot-water use.
Pros
  • Lowest typical up-front cost
  • Simplest swap when replacing an existing tank
  • Widely stocked, so same-day replacement is often possible
Considerations
  • Hot water is limited to tank capacity and needs recovery time
  • Standby heat loss between uses
  • Takes up more floor space than a wall-mounted unit
Efficiency
Moderate — varies by model UEF and insulation.

Tankless

Heats water on demand as it flows through the unit, with no storage tank sitting in the basement.

Best for
Homes that want continuous hot water and want to reclaim floor space.
Pros
  • Continuous hot water when sized correctly
  • Compact, wall-mounted footprint
  • No standby tank losses
Considerations
  • Higher up-front cost and often gas, venting or electrical upgrades
  • Flow rate limits simultaneous fixture use if undersized
  • Descaling maintenance matters in hard-water areas
Efficiency
High — no standby loss; actual savings depend on usage.

Hybrid heat pump

Moves heat from surrounding air into the tank instead of generating all of it, with electric backup.

Best for
Electric homes with a suitable conditioned space and interest in rebate programs.
Pros
  • Highest efficiency of the three in most conditions
  • Often eligible for utility and federal incentive programs
  • Dehumidifies the space it sits in
Considerations
  • Needs adequate air volume, clearance and a condensate path
  • Taller unit and some operating noise
  • Higher equipment cost before incentives
Efficiency
Highest — typically several times a standard electric tank.
