What a water heater repair costs — and when it stops being worth it

Some water heater failures are a part and an hour. Others are the tank telling you it's finished. Knowing which one you have keeps you from spending repair money on a unit that won't last the year.

Equipment pricing is shown in our warehouse. Installed pricing is quoted after we confirm the details below — we do not publish estimated installed prices.

Scope

What's included, and what isn't

Ambiguous scope is where estimates go wrong. Here's the line we draw.

Included in the installed price

  • Diagnostic visit and failure identification
  • Testing of gas supply, ignition, elements, thermostats and safety devices
  • A clear repair-or-replace recommendation with reasoning
  • The repair itself when parts are on the truck

Quoted separately

  • Special-order parts on less common models
  • Full replacement if the tank itself has failed
  • Water damage remediation, which is not plumbing work

Cost drivers

What actually moves the number

Two homes on the same street can price differently. These are the reasons why.

  • A leaking tank body

A tank leaking from the shell is not repairable at any price. Fittings, valves and connections can leak and be fixed; the steel tank cannot.

    Depends on the home

  • Age versus warranty

Repairing a unit inside its warranty period usually makes sense. Putting a major part into a unit past its expected service life rarely does.

    Depends on the home

  • Part cost and availability

A thermocouple or element is inexpensive. A gas control valve or control board on a specific model can approach a meaningful fraction of a new unit.

    Can raise the price

  • Repeat failures

A unit that has already been repaired once or twice is telling you something. Sediment, water quality or an undersized system is often the real cause.

    Can raise the price

  • Parts under manufacturer warranty

The part may be covered while labor, connections and code corrections are not. Warranty covers the part, not the plumber.

    Can lower the price

Ask every contractor these questions

Including us. A cheaper number often means a smaller scope, not a better deal.

  • Ask what specifically failed and why — not just what it costs to fix.
  • Ask what the repair is expected to buy you in remaining service life.
  • Ask whether the repair cost gets credited toward a replacement if the unit fails again soon.
  • If you're told the tank is leaking, ask to be shown where.
