Why Your Water Heater Rumbles, Pops and Bangs

Where the sediment comes from

Municipal water across the DMV carries dissolved minerals. Every time the heater warms a tank of it, some of those minerals drop out of solution and settle. Over years that sediment bakes into a crust on the tank floor, directly above a gas burner or around the lower element on an electric unit.

What it actually costs you

Sediment sits between the heat source and the water, so the burner runs longer to hit the same temperature. It also occupies volume that used to hold hot water, which is why an aging tank seems to run out faster than it used to.

• Longer burner or element run times for the same amount of hot water
• Less usable hot water because sediment displaces volume
• Localized overheating of the steel where sediment insulates the floor
• Popping, rumbling and kettling sounds as water flashes to steam under the layer

What a flush fixes — and what it doesn't

A flush removes loose sediment and slows the problem down. On a tank that has gone years without service, hardened scale may not fully clear, and a drain valve that has never been opened sometimes won't reseat. That's not a reason to skip maintenance; it's a reason to start it early in a tank's life rather than late.

When rumbling means something else

If the noise arrives with discolored water, a temperature swing, or any moisture around the base of the tank, stop troubleshooting and get eyes on it. Rust-colored water and standing moisture point at the tank itself, not the sediment.
